Quick answer: Use separate checks for line regulation, load regulation, ripple, transient recovery and long-term drift. A stable display or a single multimeter reading cannot establish all of these performance properties.

\"How

Define separate measurements

PropertyTest purpose
Line regulationSteady-state change as permitted input conditions change.
Load regulationSteady-state change as load changes at fixed input.
Ripple/noiseAC output content using a stated bandwidth and method.
Transient responseOvershoot, undershoot and settling after a load change.
Long-term driftOutput change over time after the documented warm-up.

Start with a controlled baseline

Record the supply settings, operating range, environment and measurement instrument. Keep the load and connections consistent. A DMM can quantify steady-state readings, but it cannot replace an appropriate oscilloscope measurement for a fast transient or noise waveform.

Dynamic load checks

Use a suitable load setup to apply a permitted change and monitor the DUT-side voltage. State step size, edge conditions and measurement bandwidth. Compare overshoot and recovery with the DUT tolerance. Do not assume that a stable front-panel display captures the waveform.

Line tests and high-voltage measurements

Input-condition changes require an appropriately rated controlled test setup within the allowed mains range. High or floating output measurements require suitably rated probes and isolation arrangements. Follow documented procedures rather than injecting an arbitrary disturbance into the AC input.

Keep an acceptance record

  • Instrument identity, calibration status, warm-up and test conditions.
  • Load points, connections and measurement locations.
  • Expected limits and recorded waveforms/readings.
  • Repeatability and any difference after wiring or configuration changes.

Practical checks

CheckWhat to verify
Static checksMeasure output at defined input and load conditions.
RippleUse a suitable oscilloscope setup with recorded bandwidth.
Load stepsRecord overshoot, undershoot and settling against the DUT limit.
DriftLog readings after warm-up over the intended operating period.

Compare a supply for your test

Explore variable DC power supplies or review high precision DC power supplies. Specify your operating voltage, current, power, load type and required controls for selection a configuration.
